The book covers the history of jazz from its origins to the mid-1940s from a general persective, including sociological and cultural aspects, while placing special emphasis on the musical component.

The book is divided into three parts: the first focuses on the origins of jazz; the second, on jazz in the 1920s, and the third on jazz in the 1930s and the first half of the forties.
